About Applied AEI

Applied AEI is an independent, human-centred design framework and practice focused on using the artificial emotional intelligence of generative AI to support, not replace, human thinking. This work centres on ethical, reflective, and agency-first interactions with generative AI tools.

All content is created and maintained by real humans.

The Applied AEI framework and practice were created by Cat Counsell.

Applied AEI emerged from my own work with generative AI as a career strategist and coach - when I started to notice that emotionally intelligent generative AI tools, while helpful, were validating everything I said, rather than challenging my thinking. While the artificial emotional intelligence capabilities created a sense of psychological safety, the simulation of sentience creates a power dynamic that could lull the user into relying on the judgement of something that has no ethical responsibility or accountability for its words. We have all now seen the very real impact of companies valuing engagement over impact to human psyche, when it comes to generative AI design and access.

However, I realized that if we can create robust psychological safeguarding, we could essentially democratize access to personalized, ethically-sound, and empowering interactions that would otherwise be inaccessible to many.

This framework is my response to that realization. Rather than suggesting we avoid AEI entirely - this is a blueprint for how to use it differently - supporting, enhancing, and expanding human agency responsibly, and without harm.
